LGDR by GIA — Laboratory-Grown Diamond Reports

Synthetic or laboratory-grown diamonds display several features which allow gemologists to distinguish them from natural diamonds. These include visual characteristics such as color zoning, dark metallic inclusions, weak strain patterns and distinctive patterns and colors of ultraviolet fluorescence. Because they represent types of diamonds that are rare in nature, laboratory-grown diamonds also possess additional features that can be detected with gemological instruments.

In October of 2020, we introduced LGDR by GIA — a suite of redesigned laboratory-grown diamond reports in a new digital-only format that reports 4Cs color and clarity specifications, replacing the previously-used descriptive terms and ranges. These reports include a QR code and a link to an educational page so you can learn more about laboratory-grown diamonds, including how GIA differentiates them from natural diamonds.

Each laboratory-grown diamond’s girdle is laser inscribed with the term “Laboratory-Grown” and its GIA report number to ensure that consumers can clearly differentiate the product and fully understand their purchase.

LGDR by GIA is not issued for simulants, mounted laboratory-grown diamonds or those that have undergone unstable treatments, such as fracture filling or coating. And while laboratory-grown diamond reports may be issued for diamonds that have been laser drilled, this stable treatment is prominently disclosed on the report.

GIA Laboratory-Grown Diamond Report

The GIA Laboratory-Grown Diamond Report is a digital-only report for loose, D-to-Z laboratory-grown diamonds that weigh 0.15 carats or more. This report includes a full 4Cs assessment with a plotted clarity diagram. Color and clarity specifications are described on the same scale as the GIA Diamond Grading Report for natural diamonds, but do not correlate to nature’s continuum of rarity.

GIA Laboratory-Grown Diamond Report – Dossier

The GIA Laboratory-Grown Diamond Report – Dossier is a digital-only report for loose, D-to-Z laboratory-grown diamonds that weigh 0.15 to 1.99 carats. This report includes a full 4Cs assessment described on the same scale as the GIA Diamond Dossier® for natural diamonds, but does not correlate to nature’s continuum of rarity. This report is offered at the lowest cost among the LGDR by GIA reports.
