Zodiac-Inspired Jewelry: Capricorn

Published January 12, 2015

Happy 2015! What better way to ring in the New Year than by celebrating the allure of zodiac-inspired jewelry? Throughout the year, we’ll be taking a closer look at zodiac-inspired jewelry – pieces that spark our imagination because they remind us of the qualities or symbol associated with a specific zodiac sign.  We hope you’ll enjoy our zodiac series, and please don’t be shy about sharing our posts with friends and family!

Naturally, we begin with Capricorn, the sign for those whose birthdays fall between December 22 and January 19.

Astrology describes Capricorns as practical, serious, ambitious, disciplined, and patient. We’ve identified jewelry that we think captures these Capricorn traits, or features the signature goat sign.

What kind of ring would a serious and ambitious woman desire? We suggest this 18.70 ct. emerald cut diamond ring, which is the height of old-world elegance and the essence of success.

Boucheron, one of the great jewelry maisons, made this enameled bracelet using the guilloche technique. In the two larger panels, a putto (a chubby male child who often symbolizes love) rides Capricorns. In the smaller panels, griffins, surrounded by acanthus leaves, stand guard.

Since Capricorns are sensible, they’re certain to appreciate convertible jewelry, which is jewelry that can be turned into something else. This Art Deco brooch converts into two clips. Some 19 carats of diamonds and two 3-carat emeralds glitter in the piece.

Seal from Dilmun, Bahrain. 4000 BC.

Many thousands of years have passed since this seal (circa 4000 B.C.) was carved, and it still leaves a beautiful impression of a sprightly goat. Found in Bahrain, the seal is made of steatite, a variety of talc.

The zodiac is rich in lore and inspiration. That means we’ll have a treasure trove of great pieces to share with you in the upcoming months: Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, and Taurus.

In the meantime, take a look at how jewelry designers use mythological creatures to inspire them. Dive into Bejeweled Mermaids and their Luxurious Lairs to see how they envision underwater realms.
