Sri Lankans wore star sapphires to protect against the evil eye. The star usually appears as a six-ray pattern across a cabochon-cut stone’s curved surface, as in this 22.08 ct star sapphire from Burma. It arises from white light reflecting off of numerous tiny, oriented needle-like inclusions.
